Subject: Public Domain Citation System Date: Tue, 11 Mar 1997 07:30:38 -0800 From: Vincent DiCarlo To: citation@teo.uscourts.gov I am a lawyer admitted in New York and California and am writing to you to urge the adoption of a public domain system of citations. I find it outrageous that a single company is able to use a court mandated but proprietary system of citations to control access to the law that governs all of us. The official sources of law must be freely available to all. Legal publishers can profit from added value treatises, summaries, indices, and so on that they produce through their own editorial effort. They should not be permitted to charge us for access to what belongs to the public free of charge. If the current situation is permitted to continue the public can only take it as evidence of corruption or indifference. -- Vincent DiCarlo How to be disliked #3: Stay calm when others are not.
