I am a law librarian for an office of 40 attorneys in Lexington, Kentucky and I have been a law librarian for 12 years. I agree with the ABA recommendation that the Federal and State Courts should adopt a standard citation format which will allow the release of cases citable in a uniform manner. With the development of computer technology, especially the Internet, court cases are being released to the public via alternative methods. If the court system adopts a uniform method, there will a standard system for citing cases. If the court does not develop a uniform system, the cases will still be release with each court system devising it's own method and it will be chaos. I am not anti-West Publishing. They are a good company and have a good system; however, they cannot stop the technological developments leading to the distribution of case law. It will happen. I am sure that the modification of procedures will occupy the court personnel initially. But, letting this information float out in random order will cost the courts and the bar enormous trouble and expense later. I think that releasing cases via multiple publishers will improve access and lower costs for the public and the bar.
